Every Mewtwo Card Variant Ranked by Value (2026)

Every Mewtwo Card Variant Ranked by Value (2026)

Published by JK Index · Updated August 2026

Sixty-plus printings. Twenty-seven years. One Pokémon that shows up in almost every set that matters — and half the ones that don't. Mewtwo is the most reprinted top-tier chase Pokémon in the entire TCG, and that oversupply is exactly why the surviving valuable versions matter so much. The bottom 90% of Mewtwo cards trade for pocket change. The top 10% carry an entire collection.

This guide ranks every Mewtwo worth talking about in 2026, and quietly ignores the rest.

The vintage anchor: 1999 Base Set Mewtwo

Everything starts here. The original Base Set Mewtwo Holo (#10/102) is not the rarest Mewtwo — it's the one every collector recognizes. That familiarity is what keeps prices moving even during downturns. If you're comparing Base Set holos to their later reprints, the Evolutions set is the honest control — same art, 17 years later, still trades at 15% of the original.

PrintRaw NMPSA 8PSA 9PSA 10
Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless$850$2,600$6,800$18,500
Base Set Shadowless (Unlimited)$180$520$1,350$4,200
Base Set Unlimited$45$150$380$950

The 1st Edition Shadowless PSA 10 has crossed $20,000 in isolated auction results, but sustained comps sit in the $17K–$19K window. If you're chasing this card, don't chase a single-comp spike.

Gold Star Mewtwo (EX Deoxys, 2005)

The rarest sanctioned Mewtwo ever printed. Gold Star pull rates were roughly 1 in 216 booster packs, and the Deoxys expansion wasn't a heavily opened set. PSA 10 population sits at 27 as of August 2026.

  • Raw NM: $2,800–$3,600
  • PSA 9: $8,500–$11,000
  • PSA 10: $34,000–$42,000

If you're building a Mewtwo-only case, Gold Star is the centerpiece. It's not the loudest card visually, but the population math does the heavy lifting.

Shining Mewtwo (Neo Destiny, 2002)

The last WotC-era shiny before Nintendo took over. Neo Destiny Shining Mewtwo shares the same "recolored, star-symbol" rarity slot as Shining Charizard, which is why it tracks the vintage shiny market as a whole. The related Mewtwo EX #101 from later mid-2010s prints gives you a benchmark for how far the pricing floor drops once the "shining" recolor treatment is replaced by the standard EX rarity system.

PSA 10: $1,900–$2,700. Population: 340+.

Shining Mewtwo doesn't get the Charizard treatment on price, but the appreciation curve since 2020 has been remarkably steady — about 12–15% per year without spikes or crashes.

Modern chase: Mewtwo VSTAR Alt Art

The 2022 Pokémon GO Mewtwo VSTAR Rainbow Alt Art (#079/078) is the modern grail. Two-tone tie-in with the video game franchise, appreciated art, and a print run cut off by set retirement. Collectors moving up from the modern chase tier often start here and then reach back into Fates Collide for Mega Mewtwo prints, or the BREAKthrough set for the Mewtwo EX Full Art.

  • Raw NM: $220–$280
  • PSA 10: $650–$900

This card had a rough first eighteen months post-release, then stabilized in mid-2024 and has been climbing quietly ever since. If you want a modern Mewtwo that behaves like vintage, this is it.

Everything below rank 10 falls into three buckets: bulk holo rares (under $30 PSA 10), promo reprints (variable but generally under $50 PSA 10), and modern Standard-legal ex cards where the reprint risk keeps a ceiling on any appreciation.

Which Mewtwo should you actually buy?

If you're building a Pokémon-specific collection, the ordering is straightforward. Base Set Unlimited Holo is the entry point — sub-$1,000 PSA 10, universally recognized, hard to fake. From there, the Shining and the Gold Star sit at the top of the ladder if the budget stretches. The VSTAR Rainbow Alt Art is the best modern-era hold because its supply is finished and it doesn't compete with any future reprint of the same character.

The cards to skip are the ones that look valuable but aren't scarce. Anything printed after 2020 that's still Standard-legal in 2026 has active reprint risk. Any Mewtwo from a Special Set or Celebrations subset — printed in massive volume, held by nobody who plans to sell. And any "promo Mewtwo" being sold under $100 that a seller claims is rare — with sixty-plus printings, "rare" needs specifics.

Final take

Mewtwo is one of the few Pokémon where price does not correlate with year of release. A 2005 Gold Star clears $40,000 while a 2020 Mewtwo Amazing Rare clears $25 PSA 10. The takeaway isn't complicated: buy scarcity, not name recognition. If it's a Mewtwo variant with under 500 PSA 10 population and it's been on the market for more than 5 years, it's worth considering. Everything else is filler.
