Every Gyarados Card Variant Ranked by Value (2026)
Published by JK Index · Updated August 2026
The best thing about Gyarados as a collectible? It's angry.
That sounds strange until you look at the market — the Gyarados cards that appreciate are almost always the ones that lean into rage. Skyridge Crystal Gyarados throws off crystalline fury. Dark Gyarados from Team Rocket has one of the most emotionally loaded illustrations of the 90s TCG. Even the modern VMAX Alt Art is a hurricane-scale eruption. Gyarados does not do "calm." That absence of a mid-tier tonal register keeps the good cards priced meaningfully above the forgettable ones.
Here's every Gyarados that matters, ranked with the current 2026 comps.
The Skyridge Crystal Gyarados (2003) — the one with no equal
The Skyridge Crystal Gyarados is one of the three most valuable crystal-type cards ever printed. It's also one of the most punishing cards to grade — the crystalline plate over the Pokémon's body magnifies every fingerprint, and the black outer border shows edge wear like an accusation.
- Raw NM: $2,200–$2,900
- PSA 9: $6,800–$9,000
- PSA 10: $14,000–$19,000
PSA 10 population: 47. The Crystal Gyarados sits right below Crystal Charizard on the collector totem pole, and unlike Charizard, it doesn't have a reprint anywhere in the modern catalog. That scarcity is not going anywhere.
Team Rocket Dark Gyarados (2000)
Now the villain rises. The Team Rocket set Dark Gyarados (#8/82) has one of the most instantly recognizable art panels of the WotC era — the red mane over a burnt-orange sky, the reflection of aggression in a body that used to be innocent. It's the first Gyarados most vintage collectors mention when they explain the character's TCG mythology.
- Raw NM: $85–$120
- PSA 8: $260–$360
- PSA 9: $620–$850
- PSA 10: $1,600–$2,200
1st Edition Dark Gyarados PSA 10 hits $5,800–$8,200. Population under 90. The Dark Gyarados card index is the reference point most collectors watch for month-over-month comp shifts.
Also worth flagging: Giovanni's Gyarados from Gym Heroes exists and sits around $850 PSA 10 — a lesser-known variant that shows up as a bonus card in themed Team Rocket cases.
Base Set Gyarados Holo (1999) — the underrated original
Not the loudest Gyarados card, but the reference point for every discussion:
- Raw NM: $130–$180
- PSA 9: $550–$720
- PSA 10: $1,300–$1,700
The 1st Edition Shadowless version reaches $4,500–$6,200 PSA 10 with fewer than 130 known copies at that grade. If you want a "safe" vintage Gyarados that's not going to lose money in any conceivable market — this is it.
Modern flagship: Gyarados VMAX Rainbow Rare (2020)
Not spectacular. Not disappointing. Middle-tier steady:
- Raw NM: $52–$72
- PSA 10: $180–$260
The VMAX Alt Art from Fusion Strike is the better modern hold — $340–$480 PSA 10, cleaner appreciation, similar era, better art.

Cards below rank 10 are mostly Standard-era modern reprints with active reprint risk, or Japanese-only prints that haven't crossed into English collector attention yet.
Which Gyarados should you actually buy?
Buy the anger. The Gyarados cards that hold value are the ones that make the character look dangerous. That's the pattern.
Entry point: Base Unlimited Holo at $1,500 PSA 10. Iconic, safe, universally recognized.
Mid-tier target: Dark Gyarados 1st Edition Holo. Under $8,500 PSA 10, single-dip appreciation trend since 2021, no reprint risk.
Grail: Skyridge Crystal Gyarados. Under 50 copies in PSA 10, no reprint possible, aesthetic weight that grows with time. It's expensive. It should be.
Skip: every Standard-era Gyarados reprint from 2022-2025. Populations are too high and reprint pressure hasn't cleared.
Final take
Gyarados is one of the few Pokémon where the market genuinely rewards artistic execution over popularity — you can be popular and still price flat, or you can look terrifying and quietly compound at 12% per year. The Dark Gyarados 1st Edition and Skyridge Crystal are proof: the market pays for illustrations that stop your scroll. Everything else is filler.
