Every Gengar Card Variant Ranked by Value (2026)
Published by JK Index · Updated August 2026
Here's the thing about Gengar cards: the good ones are really good, and the rest are almost invisible. There's no middle ground with this Pokémon.
Base Fossil Gengar sits in a case somewhere in every serious vintage collection. Skyridge Crystal Gengar has quietly become one of the most photogenic vintage cards ever made. The Fusion Strike Gengar VMAX Alt Art broke every expectation for a modern chase card in 2021. And then there are the other forty-plus Gengar prints — most of them worth about the same as the paper they're printed on.
This 2026 guide focuses on the fifteen Gengar variants actually worth collecting, and gives the ranking straight.
The vintage entry: Fossil Gengar Holo (1999)
Where every Gengar collection starts. The Fossil Gengar (#5/62) is the second-most iconic vintage ghost card behind Team Rocket Dark Gengar, but the Fossil version is the one that anchors modern prices.
- Raw NM: $180–$260
- PSA 8: $520–$720
- PSA 9: $1,400–$1,900
- PSA 10: $3,800–$5,200
1st Edition Fossil Gengar exists but wasn't printed in the same tight volumes as Base Set 1st Editions. Prices for 1st Ed. PSA 10 sit around $8,000–$11,000 — a meaningful premium, but not the 3x jump you see with Base Set holos.
Skyridge Crystal Gengar (2003)
This is the card that changed how modern collectors talk about vintage. Crystal Gengar has a translucent purple treatment that, in person, still feels ahead of its time twenty-three years later. Learn more about the Skyridge set — WotC's final release before Nintendo took over the license.
- Raw NM: $1,600–$2,200
- PSA 9: $5,500–$7,500
- PSA 10: $14,000–$19,000
Skyridge was the final WotC set before Nintendo took over, and it wasn't opened at high rates. PSA 10 population is 61. Crystal cards are extremely hard to grade — the crystalline surface exaggerates any handling.
Team Rocket Dark Gengar (2000)
The Team Rocket set's Dark Gengar has one of the most instantly recognizable art panels in vintage Pokémon TCG. It's not the most valuable Gengar, but it's the one non-collectors recognize when they see it. For a modern reprint reference, the Evolutions set preserves the original Gengar Base Set art in a Standard-legal-era holo pattern. The Gym Heroes-era Sabrina's Gengar is the character-linked cousin — same Pokémon, entirely different collector appeal driven by the Trainer-partner mechanic.
- Raw NM: $110–$150
- PSA 10: $1,400–$1,900
The 1st Edition version sits at $3,200–$4,500 PSA 10. It's the cheapest way to own a "famous" vintage Gengar in a slab.
Modern flagship: Fusion Strike Gengar VMAX Alt Art (2021)
The Fusion Strike Gengar VMAX Alt Art (#271/264) is the card that proved modern chase cards could behave like vintage on appreciation. Released November 2021, it hit $220 raw within six months and hasn't looked back. The earlier Darkness Ablaze print of Gengar VMAX (regular art) is the reference point for how much the Alt Art variant added to the base card's ceiling — roughly 8x on the same grade. For the current era, Mega Gengar ex - 125/217 is the Scarlet & Violet-block flagship carrying the Mega treatment forward.
- Raw NM: $520–$680
- PSA 10: $1,600–$2,100
Fusion Strike is out of print, the specific alt art hasn't been reprinted, and Gengar's popularity keeps buyer demand steady. This is the modern card in the Gengar catalog most likely to keep behaving like vintage over the next decade.

Which Gengar should you actually buy?
The answer changes based on what type of collector you are.
If you're building an iconic-cards case, buy the Fossil Gengar Unlimited Holo. It's under $5,500 PSA 10, universally recognized, and forms the foundation of any Gengar-themed collection. Add the Team Rocket Dark Gengar next for design variety.
If you're chasing appreciation, the Fusion Strike VMAX Alt Art is the pick. Modern art appeal, finished print run, sub-$2,500 entry point — it has the profile of a card that will double in the next five years, not stagnate.
If you're going for a grail card, the Skyridge Crystal Gengar is the play. Population under 65, historical significance as one of the last WotC crystal cards, and the visual appeal that keeps this card on wishlists for collectors who never plan to sell.
Final take
Gengar is the ghost Pokémon that TCG artists actually love drawing. That's why the catalog has depth. But it's also one of the most overprinted modern Pokémon — dozens of Gengar cards from 2019–2024 exist that will never trade above $10 PSA 10. The rule is simple: if it's a Gengar card and it hasn't been talked about in this ranking, it isn't a collectible piece. It's a bulk card with a cool name. Stick to the top 15, and you'll be fine.
