Every Dragonite Card Variant Ranked by Value (2026)
Published by JK Index · Updated August 2026
Let's get straight to the part everyone underestimates.
Dragonite is not a Charizard-tier chase Pokémon. It's better. Dragonite is the card that produces asymmetric returns because nobody is watching it — and nobody is watching it because it's not on the cover of any set. That's the entire trade. The dragon that flies while everyone else stares at the flame.
This ranking runs through every Dragonite that matters in 2026. And if you're not paying attention to the error variants, you're missing the actual story.
The one nobody explains right: Dark Dragonite Error (Team Rocket, 2000)
The Team Rocket set shipped with a genuine, provable printing error on Dark Dragonite (#5/82). The card has multiple variants due to a mid-press correction — the "no attack damage" version and the corrected version. Some 1st Edition copies exist with the error preserved, and those are the ones that hit five figures.
Real 2026 PSA 10 comps:
- Dark Dragonite Unlimited (standard holo): $520–$720
- Dark Dragonite 1st Edition (standard holo): $1,900–$2,600
- Dark Dragonite Error variant: $3,400–$4,800
- Dark Dragonite 1st Edition Error: $6,500–$8,900
The 1st Edition Error is the grail. PSA 10 population is single digits — last I checked, 6 cards total. Every time one appears at auction, the price ratchets up.
Most sellers don't know they have the error variant. Most graders catch it eventually. If you have Team Rocket 1st Edition Dark Dragonites in a binder, pull them out today and check for the missing damage numeral on Hyper Beam. Do it before you finish reading this article.
Fossil Dragonite Holo (1999)
The classic. Fossil set Dragonite (#4/62) is the OG dragon card. Not as iconic as base Charizard, but that's exactly why it's an interesting hold — it doesn't have the reprint-anxiety overhead that Charizard now carries.
- Raw NM: $65–$95
- PSA 8: $220–$310
- PSA 9: $520–$720
- PSA 10: $1,400–$1,900
1st Edition version: $6,800–$9,500 PSA 10. Population under 200. Behaves like Charizard from 2016.
Gold Star Dragonite (EX Dragon Frontiers, 2006)
The rarest sanctioned Dragonite. Dragon Frontiers Gold Star pulls were roughly 1 in 216 packs, and the set was heavily aimed at competitive players rather than collectors, so many were played instead of preserved.
- Raw NM: $1,600–$2,200
- PSA 10: $8,500–$12,000
PSA 10 population: 38. If the graded market tightens further, this card is a candidate to break $15,000 by 2028. Not a prediction — a math problem.
Modern flagship: Dragonite V Alt Art (2022)
Solid modern chase. Not spectacular, but tracks steadily:
- Raw NM: $85–$120
- PSA 10: $320–$450
The Alt Art version has a mid-flight scene with fine linework — it grades cleanly on centered copies, which is unusual for Alt Art releases.

Which Dragonite should you actually buy?
Two answers depending on your budget and appetite for research.
If you have $2,000 or less: Buy the Fossil Unlimited Holo PSA 10. Under $1,900. Steady 10–14% annual appreciation for the last five years. Nothing exotic. Just a compounding vintage holo that isn't priced like Charizard.
If you have $8,000+ and time to hunt: Look for Dark Dragonite Team Rocket 1st Editions with the missing damage numeral. This is the trade nobody in the retail collector market is running because nobody has read the error variant closely. The Dark Dragonite Error listing shows how the corrected market values these. The 1st Edition version is where the real ROI lives.
Skip: any modern Standard-legal print. Dragonite hasn't had a modern reprint chase that's held up long-term. Wait for the next major set to include a Dragonite Alt Art and buy the finished-print version 12 months after set retirement.
Final take
Charizard has become a market. Dragonite is still a discovery. That won't last forever — vintage dragon cards are one meaningful cultural moment away from mainstream collector attention. Right now, you can buy a Fossil Dragonite PSA 10 for the price of a Base Set common holo. In 2030, that math will probably look silly. Move now, or watch someone else move in your place.
