Charizard UPC: Everything You Should Know Before Buying (2026)
By Contributor @ JK Index
$119.99 MSRP. Two Charizard UPCs exist. The 2022 SwSh version trades $80–$110 sealed (below MSRP); the 2025 Mega Charizard X ex trades $180–$220 (up 50–83% over MSRP in eight months). PSA 10 spread on the top chase promo runs $110–$320 depending on the box. Buy for display and long hold; open only near MSRP.

1. What is charizard upc
Ultra Premium Collection is the top of the Pokémon Company's sealed hierarchy. Below it sit ETBs, Premium Collections, Collection boxes, and blister packs. UPC is the flagship SKU released once or twice a year around a specific Pokémon. Charizard has exactly two UPCs to date.
Every UPC ships with: 1 or more foil promo cards exclusive to the box, 16–18 booster packs from current-block sets, a themed playmat, 65 sleeves, deck box, dice, condition markers, metal coin, player's guide, and a TCG Live code. What separates it from an ETB is scale: roughly double the packs, more accessories, and promos that are always etched or masterpiece treatments printed exclusively for the box.
The 2022 Sword & Shield Charizard UPC
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Set era | Sword & Shield (2020–2022 blocks) |
| Release date | October 28, 2022 |
| MSRP | $119.99 |
| Promo cards | Charizard V SWSH260, Charizard VMAX SWSH261 (G-Max Wildfire 300 dmg), Charizard VSTAR SWSH262, all etched foil |
| Booster packs | 16 packs from Evolving Skies, Fusion Strike, Brilliant Stars, Astral Radiance, Lost Origin, Vivid Voltage, Darkness Ablaze |
| Playmat | Gigantamax Charizard illustration |
| Accessories | 65 sleeves, deck box, metal coin, metal dice, condition markers, player's guide |
Collectors call this "the OG UPC." Evolving Skies is one of the most-hunted SwSh sets, and a raw Umbreon VMAX Alt Art pull from an ES pack is what buyers underwrite when they crack the box.
The 2025 Mega Charizard X ex UPC (Phantasmal Flames era)
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Set era | Phantasmal Flames + Mega Evolution (late SV) |
| Release date | November 14, 2025 |
| MSRP | $119.99 |
| Promo cards | Mega Charizard X ex MEP #023 (blue-flame masterpiece by Oswaldo Kato), Oricorio ex (fire-type support) |
| Booster packs | 18 packs: 4× Phantasmal Flames, 4× Journey Together, 4× Mega Evolution, 4× Destined Rivals, 2× Surging Sparks |
| Playmat | Mega Charizard X full-art |
| Accessories | 65 sleeves, 100+ card deck box, metal engraved Charizard coin, 6 damage dice, TCG Live code, rulebook |
This is the box behind "charizard upc phantasmal flames" and "mega charizard upc" search traffic. It shipped the day Phantasmal Flames hit shelves. On r/PokemonInvesting, u/Stencil_Abuse (2026-01-26) frames the appeal as aesthetic first, financial second: "I think the box is neat, the promos are awesome, and it has a good pack variety."
2. Why collectors care about it right now
Three things are pulling on Charizard UPC pricing in the summer of 2026.
2022 UPC has crossed below MSRP. Sealed SwSh UPCs trade $80–$110 across TCGplayer, eBay Sold, and JK Index Marketplace, below $119.99 for the first time since launch. Sword & Shield packs are no longer standard-legal, so pack speculators exited. What's left is the collectible value of the three etched-foil promos. Bulls on r/PokemonInvesting argue the window won't hold: u/2milliondollartrny (2025-12-19) wrote "No matter what price you buy these at they will appreciate way more than MSRP within the next few years," and u/Thanos-Wept (2025-12-19) put it more simply: "I don't think you can go wrong with UPCs. Especially with Charizard."
2025 Mega UPC is still hot. Phantasmal Flames is chase-heavy, Mega Evolution revival added new collectors, and MEP #023 has no other print. Sealed 2025 UPCs trade $180–$220, a $60–$100 premium over MSRP held stable for eight months. Bears on r/PokemonInvesting argue further doubling is unlikely: u/B-Rayy06 (2026-01-27) wrote "I don't really see this doubling in price any time soon, as it has already basically tripled in price in the last year."
PSA 10 population on 2025 MEP #023 is still low. Card is nine months old, PSA grades new sets conservatively, current PSA 10 comp ~$299.99 on retailer listings. The 2022 etched trio has years of graded copies but the finicky etched-foil treatment keeps clean 10s at a real gap over raw NM.
3. Current market price snapshot
August 2026 comps from JK Index Marketplace, eBay Sold, TCGplayer. Prices move weekly, so treat them as a range, not a fixed sticker.
| Item | Sword & Shield (2022) | Mega Charizard X ex (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Sealed UPC | $80 – $110 | $180 – $220 |
| Full promo set, raw NM | $60 – $85 | $75 – $130 |
| Chase promo raw NM | Charizard VSTAR SWSH262: $30 – $45 | Mega Charizard X ex MEP #023: $70 – $110 |
| Chase promo PSA 10 | $110 – $170 (etched) | $260 – $320 |
| Playmat only, sealed | $18 – $28 | $22 – $32 |
| Booster packs (per pack) | $8 – $14 (varies by set) | $5 – $9 |
| Complete parted-out box (upper bound) | ~$210 | $210 – $330 |
The 2022 UPC costs less sealed than the parts sum to if you resold everything, the classic arbitrage argument. It only works if you can actually clear the packs and accessories at those prices, minus eBay fees, shipping, and time.
The 2025 UPC works the other way. Sealed price sits above the sum of packs and accessories, and the promo carries the entire premium. If Mega Charizard X ex #023 corrects, so does the box.
4. Card variants that exist (base, ex, alt art, etc.)
Card variants for a UPC has two meanings: the exclusive promo cards inside the box, and the alt versions of that same Pokémon in the main sets whose packs ship inside the UPC. Both matter for pricing and grading.
Variants of the 2022 SwSh UPC promos
| Card | Number | Treatment | What makes it different |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charizard V | SWSH260 | Etched foil | Non-etched V prints exist in Champion's Path 074/073, Darkness Ablaze 019/189, plus black-star promos. Only SWSH260 is etched-UPC-exclusive. |
| Charizard VMAX | SWSH261 | Etched foil | Evolves from V. G-Max Wildfire hits for 300. Distinct from Champion's Path Rainbow, DAA base VMAX, and Shining Fates SV107/SV122. |
| Charizard VSTAR | SWSH262 | Etched foil | VSTAR power attaches 3 basic energy from discard. The box's chase card, the etched-foil UPC treatment is exclusive. |
Variants of the 2025 Mega Charizard X ex UPC promos
| Card | Number | Treatment | What makes it different |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mega Charizard X ex | MEP #023 | Blue-flame masterpiece | Illustrator Oswaldo Kato. MEP = Mega Evolution Promos set code. This art has no in-set booster-pack equivalent, UPC-only at launch. |
| Oricorio ex | (Oricorio ex promo) | Foil promo | Fire-type support card. Not a Charizard, not the chase, but sees deck play more than typical UPC support promos. |
Charizard alt arts you might pull from the packs
| Card | Set | Which UPC's packs |
|---|---|---|
| Charizard V Alt Art | Brilliant Stars 154/172 | 2022 UPC (BRS packs) |
| Charizard VSTAR Rainbow Rare | Brilliant Stars 174/172 | 2022 UPC (BRS packs) |
| Charizard ex Special Illustration Rare | Obsidian Flames 215/197 | Not in either UPC's pack list |
| Mega Charizard X ex Special Illustration Rare | Mega Evolution set | 2025 UPC (Mega Evolution packs), the SIR variant of the UPC promo, highest-priced chase in the 2025 pack pool |
Pull rates for these are set-level, not box-level. UPC boxes don't guarantee any specific alt art.
5. Should you grade it?
Grading takes 20–60 days depending on the service and tier, costs $19–$150 per card, and can either double the card's value or leave you underwater once fees are counted. The math on a UPC promo has three inputs: raw-to-graded spread, realistic PSA 10 rate, grading fee. On r/PokeInvesting, u/Wonderful-Passion-28 (2026-01-19) argues the promos alone justify the buy-in: "The promos are bangers with time it'll cover the cost of the box itself." Real openers push back because of print defects, with u/Jkanvil (2026-06-10) flagging the recurring issue: "Don't the promos have notoriously bad print quality?"
The 2022 etched-foil trio
Etched-foil is PSA's trickiest treatment. Print-line defects, stamping variations, and edge-wear from the box's plastic tray count against Gem Mint. PSA 10 rates on pack-fresh etched-foil from unopened UPCs run 40–60% for careful openers.
Raw NM SWSH262 (VSTAR): $30–$45. PSA 10: $110–$170. Gross uplift $65–$140. At PSA Value ($19), the trade nets profit on a 10. On a 9 ($50–$70), the fee wipes the spread.
Rule: grade pack-fresh with no visible defects, Value or Regular tier, expect positive EV only if you're comfortable with the 40–60% hit rate. VMAX SWSH261 has slightly higher upside (Gigantamax full-arts still move). V SWSH260 is lowest-EV, grade last. u/epixINC (2026-08-02) on r/PokeInvesting states the hard rule bluntly: "Everyone of these cards is absolutely not worth grading unless you 100000% sure it'll 10." Read that as a filter, not a ban.
The 2025 Mega Charizard X ex #023
Nine months old. Population still forming. Raw NM $70–$110. PSA 10 $260–$320. Gross uplift $150–$250, larger than the 2022 promos in dollar terms.
The catch: PSA grades new masterpiece treatments conservatively while calibration settles. Early Gem Mint rates on 2025 MEP cards run 30–45%. If your copy presents perfectly out of the box, PSA Regular or higher, expect a longer turnaround.
Run every raw card through the Grading Readiness Scan on JK Index before you ship.
Other components
Sealed booster packs can be graded by WATA and CGC, not PSA. Small market, niche. UPC buyers chasing specific packs (Evolving Skies) can source loose packs directly.
Playmats, sleeves, and dice have no graded resale market. Keep them mint in the box if you're preserving the sealed UPC.
6. Where to buy raw + graded
| Venue | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| JK Index Marketplace | Sealed UPCs + comp history | Filter by set code (SWSH260/261/262 or MEP #023) to compare raw, PSA 9, PSA 10 side by side |
| TCGplayer | Deepest inventory for raw singles | Direct-service listings are safest; filter by "Ultra Premium Collection Charizard" |
| eBay Sold Listings | Real-market comps | Sort "sold," date-filter to 30 days, watch for shill patterns |
| Pokémon Center | 2025 UPC restocks at $119.99 MSRP | Small allocations, region-locked. Sign up for alerts. |
| Local game stores | 2022 UPCs at MSRP or below | Call around before buying online. Some LGS clear pre-SV product. |
| PWCC / Goldin / Heritage | Higher-end graded auctions | BGS 9.5+ etched, PSA 10 MEP #023 with strong subgrade patterns |
7. Verdict: hold, flip, or skip
| Buyer profile | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Already own 2022 UPC sealed at cost <$120 | Hold | Trades below MSRP now. Evolving Skies inside is a long-cycle appreciator. Zero holding cost if sleeved. |
| Bought 2025 UPC at MSRP | Consider flip | $180–$220 secondary premium is real today. Spread depends on MEP #023 holding its raw price. |
| Considering 2022 UPC at MSRP or above | Skip | Sealed cheaper on secondary. Anything above $120 is a collector-tax. |
| Considering 2025 UPC above $230 sealed | Skip | Component value tops out around $330 best-case per TCG Protectors breakdown. Wait for Pokémon Center restock. |
| Have a pack-fresh chase promo | Grade | VSTAR SWSH262 and MEP #023 clear the fee spread. VMAX SWSH261 is a secondary submission. Skip Charizard V SWSH260 and Oricorio ex. |
| Considering cracking a 2022 UPC | Don't | SwSh is post-rotation. Loose Evolving Skies packs at $12–$14 are more efficient. |
| Considering cracking a 2025 UPC at MSRP | Yes | Current-block packs, promos slot into completeness value, cracking cost is not the same drag. |
On r/pokemoncards, u/White_Ghanaian (2026-01-04) sums up the opener thesis in one line: "It's a buy to open not to keep sealed." That's the case against speculating on sealed 2025 UPCs at premium prices. And on r/PokeInvesting, u/AlexanderClover (2025-12-14) grounds the variance reality: "I opened my charzard upc and only pulled the mega meowth and something else that I honestly forgot the name of." Every crack is a sample of one.
Two Charizard UPCs, one buying decision
